#7933 5.5"x5.5" Houma Sweetgrass basket, bundle coiled fragrant sweetgrass with spaced palmetto stitching, very similar to Gullah work, and in fact, collected in Louisiana and attributed to the Louisiana Gullah, the globular shape with inset lid and originally brightly colored grass (now faded) is not like South Carolina work, there was a tribe in Louisiana called the Bayogoula (bauo people) who merged with the Houma, and perhaps this name was confused with Gullah from an older memory, ca. 1920, one minor ding to shoulder otherwise very good condition $95.00
